Siblings Vivaan (14) and Kaira (8) Rajan have always been avid readers, which means that over the years they have accumulated quite a collection of books. When mom Kaveri started a cleaning spree, the kids decided to go through their books. They found many favorites that have been read multiple times but that they have outgrown. Thinking about donating their own books sparked the idea that other kids might have outgrown some of their books as well, so they created a flyer for their mom to share in neighborhood group chats.
Even though they started with the idea of collecting kids’ books, after hearing of their neighbors’ enthusiasm for adding to the donation the siblings expanded to include books for all age groups and from all genres. They chose a two day collection period and decided their only criteria would be that the books be in good condition. Mom did the driving, but the kids did all the collecting, then together they organized their haul. In the end they gathered up 272 books!

Recognizing that not everyone has money to buy books, Vivaan and Kaira knew they wanted to make their books available to other kids. To our good fortune, these two big hearted young people chose to donate the books they collected to the Friends of the Mill Creek Library.
The Friends are a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting the Mill Creek Library and local literacy efforts. We do that by raising funds, mainly through sales of used (and new) books that have been donated to us by members of the community. If you have been to the Mill Creek Library, you have likely seen the sales shelves in the lobby full of all kinds of books, from adult fiction and nonfiction to board books for the littlest readers, and everything in between. All of the books we sell are donated, so the selection varies widely and changes by the day.
While we are tremendously grateful for each and every donation, we have to acknowledge just how special this particular donation is. Vivaan and Kaira, we cannot thank you enough for helping the Friends reach our goals. You inspire us with your generosity and commitment to your community.
