In the heart of the Pacific Northwest, Blue Velvet Groove continues to prove why they’re the region’s premier funk and disco ensemble. Their recent performance at Aurora Borealis’s “Funk-a-licious Holiday Dance Party” on December 7th showcased the band’s signature blend of high-energy classics and infectious grooves.
The venue itself, with its sparkling bottles and ambient lighting, provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of music and dancing. From the main performance space to the foosball room and private party areas, the entire establishment buzzed with electric energy. The exceptional staff, including Ryan and Danielle, contributed to the vibrant atmosphere that kept patrons dancing throughout the night.
Founded in 2018 in Bothell, Blue Velvet Groove emerged when four musicians left another band, united by their desire to create music that gets people dancing while making a positive impact in the community. Today, their nine-piece ensemble, featuring a powerful three-part vocal harmony and dynamic horn section, delivers that vision with style. They chose to emphasize a “wall” of vocals and horns, creating their distinctive sound during regular rehearsals at Paradise Valley Studios in Woodinville.
The band’s powerhouse lineup includes KP Plumlee, Victoria Sadow, and Karina Mitchell sharing lead vocal duties, Bryan Clark on lead guitar, Luke Jackson on bass, Dr. Rob Pastorok on keyboards, Roger Johnson on drums, and a magnificent horn section featuring Harlan Feinstein on trombone, Neil Stafford on tenor and alto sax, and Steve Mraz substituting for Kevin Seeley on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Their impressive performance history spans notable venues and events throughout the region. They’ve graced stages at the Sky River Rock Festival 51/Road to Woodstock tour (2019), hosted a fundraiser for Fred Hutch at The Royal Room (2019), and even adapted to the pandemic with their ABTV Blue Velvet Groove Funky Virtual Concert (2020). Recent years have seen them performing at McMenamins Anderson School’s New Year’s Eve celebrations (2022-present), Mukilteo Music at the Beach (2022), City of Issaquah Concert on the Green (2023), and the Hilarity for Charity Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert (2023). Looking ahead to 2024, they’re set to bring their dynamic performances to both Muckleshoot Casino and The Point Casinos.
The band’s connection to Aurora Borealis runs deep, as both entities grew together since their inception. The venue’s superior sound system and dedicated staff have made it a favorite spot for the group’s regular performances.
Blue Velvet Groove has become the go-to band for celebrations of all kinds, from birthdays and anniversaries to bachelorette parties and corporate events. They’ve even hosted prom redo events, alumni gatherings, and a memorable divorce celebration. Their repertoire spans iconic hits from Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Earth, Wind & Fire, alongside classic funk and disco favorites from artists like Chic, KC and the Sunshine Band, Bruno Mars, and Donna Summer.
